There are many reasons why people choose to call Huntington Beach home, but one of those includes the vast array of events and activities that take place throughout the year. As the summer is drawing to a close and the crowds are starting to dwindle, you may be wondering how you’ll fill the remaining days before the kids go back to school and you have the city back to yourself. Here’s a look at some of the upcoming end-of-summer events taking place in Surf City!
Ribs, Pigs & Watermelons: On August 16-18, American Family Housing will be hosting their 2nd annual Ribs, Pigs, & Watermelons Professional BBQ competition and Beer festival at the Huntington Beach State Beach parking area at PCH and Beach Blvd. The event will take place from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. on Friday; noon to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday; and noon to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. This is a KCBS (Kansas City BBQ Society) sanctioned event that’s taking place along the water! If you’re a Huntington Beach homeowner who loves barbecue, you don’t want to miss this event. There will be a $10,000 prize for the top BBQ team, including those from the West Coast and around the country. Additionally, there will be a Kids’ BBQ competition for ages 6-15 on Saturday. Other events include watermelon carving demonstrations, watermelon eating contests, a seed-spitting for distance contest, and more. Live music will be provided on the stage including rock, country and jazz music. The event will also feature over a dozen small craft beers from local and national brewers. Adults can purchase a one-day pass for $5.00 and kids 8-12 for $2.50. Kids 7-and-under get in free.
Surf City Garage: On August 25, Surf City Garage is hosting their annual car show at 5872 Engineer Drive. Admission is free for spectators, so it’s a great way to spend the day! If you have a car that you’re interested in entering in the show, the entry fee is $30 through 8/17/13, and $40 after. The event includes the NASCAR racing experience in full-size NASCAR simulators, plus tons of demos, giveaways and fun entertainment for the whole family. The event is taking place from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
