With the goal of making the Huntington Beach area increasingly green-friendly for residents and visitors alike, local council members voted Monday, March 18, 2013 to further the fight toward banning plastic bag distribution in the surrounding area. Local Huntington Beach shoppers may soon be required to pay ten cents for a paper bag when shopping. They will also have the option of providing their own reusable bags.
Along with shoppers, a number of grocery and convenience stores, including Home Depot, Kohl’s and Wal-Mart, will also be affected by the proposed plastic bag ban. Huntington Beach officials hope to make the city more green as well as address the various health concerns that have negatively affected residents in the Southern California and Huntington Beach areas.
Quoting a letter by the Huntington Beach Environmental Board, Councilman Joe Shaw said to the Huntington Beach Independent, “Plastic is not biodegradable and it remains in our environment. It is produced from non-renewable resources. Plastic bags break down into small pieces that absorb toxic chemicals. They are ingested by marine life and they enter the food chain we depend on.”
The Orange County cities of Laguna Beach and Dana Point have already approved a ban on plastic bags, and if council members approve the plastic bag ban vote on April 11, Huntington Beach will become the third city in Orange County to ban the use of plastic in retail and grocery stores. Rise Above Plastics coordinator for the Surfrider Foundation, Bill Hickman, hopes that Huntington Beach will set a precedent for other cities in California.
