Ride-sharing has always long been a great way to save on gas and to be able to utilize the carpool lane to skirt traffic on busy freeways like the 405 and 55. But typically, ride-sharing has occurred within families or with friends. A new ride-sharing service called Lyft broke onto the scene to change all of that, and now, Huntington Beach home owners are taking full advantage of the trendy new app.
With the quick click of an app, you can arrange for one of Lyft’s cars to retrieve you from your Huntington Beach home, a local restaurant or other business. And you can’t miss them, as all cars feature a bright pink mustache attached to the car’s grill. The service is currently available in Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and parts of Irvine.
Drivers are paid at the end of the ride via gratuity that is suggested by the app, and both drivers and riders have the opportunity to rate each other. So, what makes Lyft different from a traditional taxi service and apps like Taximagic? For one, Lyft operates in places that taxis might not, and will pick people up at all hours.
Lyft co-founder Logan Green said: “It’s easy to forget our smartphone options skyrocketed overnight. Facebook has become a sort of baseline identity system for the Internet. We rely on Facebook. Every driver and every passenger has to tie in to their social identity and it makes it difficult for someone to make a fake account.”
And the experience is something else too. Riders are able to sit in the front seat of the car, hook up their iPhone to listen to the music of their choice and often find themselves conversing with drivers who are much more personable than any Yellow Cab service.
Green went on to say: “When someone joins a program like Zipcar, they’re much more likely to get rid of their car or go from a two-car family to a one-car family. And as soon as someone does that, they ride public transportation more, they walk more, they bike more. It’s the same pattern with Lyft.”
