Huntington Beach home owners are wishing well three teenage surfers known as “Emblem3.” The group prevailed on Simon Cowell’s show, the X Factor, and are headed to Miami for the show’s “Boot Camp” episodes. Adds Cowell, “We brought 120 acts to Miami. Twenty four will be left at the end.”
The lucky acts who made it this far will stay at the posh Mondrian hotel, learning about what it’s like to live the good life and having to balance living with other contestants and also readying themselves for the competition. The first task will be to sing a song in front of other contestants. “No second chances. You either stand out or your go home,” says Senior Associate Judge Britney Spears.
Singing in front of the other contestants doesn’t always come naturally. On shows like the X Factor and American Idol, this is often the stage of the competition that separates the amateurs who have a shot from those who simply aren’t ready. As for Emblem3, the three surfers ages 16-19, they could have used some additional coordination with both their moves and their music. Their sound is a strange mix of rap and melody that lacks a solid direction.
Emblem3 is part of Simon Cowell’s groups this year, and while the trio sang to much fanfare, it was clear why the band fell flat on their cover song, The Police’s “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic:” one of the members became distracted by the sun. Stay tuned to see how far Emblem3 makes it during this season of the X Factor.
