Today I’m talking about real estate coaches, primarily Brian Buffini and Tom Ferry. And the reason I’m bringing these guys up is because I’ve been… I’m a huge fan of real estate coaching. I’ve been coached for say the last six years I believe. I believe it’s very helpful for your business. If you’re new in the business, I think it’s very helpful. If you’ve been in the business a long time, I think it’s very helpful. The reason I’m talking about these two guys specifically is because, at least where I am, there’s a… kind of a divide. You’re either a Brian Buffini fan or you’re a Tom Ferry fan. I want to talk about the differences in the two. I’ve been coached by both, not directly right. Tom ferry has coaches that work under him in his company and the same with Brian. I haven’t been coached by Brian or Tom specifically, but the coaches that work for their company. I have experienced with both.
Today, I just want to share my experience and why I chose one company over the other and why I continue to get coached by that company after making that move. This video isn’t meant to be controversial. It’s not meant to bad mouth either of these guys. I believe that in the real estate market, both of these guys have a place in the market. Both of these guys are relevant in the market, but their coaching methods are completely different. Right? Brian Buffini’s method, Buffini & Company is very relational approach to real estate. What I mean by that, it’s very much kind of an old school way of doing business. Old school in the sense that it’s been around for ages and Brian’s been teaching the same method of coaching for 20 plus years and that’s a relational method.
What I mean by that is you’re more or less creating an advocate of your business. You’re following up with past clients, with friends, with family members, through a series of calls, notes and pop bys to stay in touch with them. You’re doing that because you want to deepen the relationship with those clients and get to know them and what have you. And through that, the theory is that those people will refer you to their friends and family when buying or selling real estate. My experience with, with Tom’s company, is a little bit the opposite, right? Tom is a little more trendy, a little bit more up to date on video, on marketing, different types of marketing. He doesn’t really have one approach that he takes, like Brian’s very relational in his approach. Tom’s method is a little more of doing a little bit of everything, doing farming, buying leads, online lead generation, doing videos. I mean, just a series of a lot of different things in order to figure out what your niche is, your specialty is and that’s how you create your business.
Now, that method didn’t work for me, right, because I don’t enjoy door-knocking. I don’t enjoy cold calling people, knocking, doing expireds. The reason I don’t enjoy those, it’s not that I’m scared to do it, it’s just that I don’t like that when people do that to me, right? I don’t like when people show up at my door unannounced. I don’t like people calling me unannounced. I felt like when I was doing that, I was kind of going against my inner beliefs and what I believed was right or wrong. Now, keep in mind, I know people that are very successful with Tom and people that are very successful with Brian. There’s two methods at work, but I chose the more relational approach.
After being with Tom’s company for just over a year, I believe that the coaching, I just didn’t feel like I was getting the value out of the coaching with Tom Ferry that I’m currently getting with Brian’s company and Buffini & Company. The reason I say that is because with Brian, initially before getting assigned a coach, you actually do what’s called a heritage profile. They do a profile on you to figure out what your strengths and your weaknesses are so that they can coach you specifically. At the time, this was six plus years ago, they didn’t do that at Tom Ferry. They may do that now, but they didn’t do it then. I was just assigned to coach that I didn’t really feel like was… We didn’t really… What’s the right word? We didn’t really mesh, so to speak. Whereas my coach at Buffini & Company is a similar personality. He has real estate experience so he can kind of coach me through things that he’s been through when we’re doing… when we’re having similar problems, which I feel is very helpful.
Not only the coaching aspect of the business, but Brian also focuses on other areas of your life. Once I took that into account through my coaching… And what I mean by that is you have the business area of your life, you have the financial aspect, you have personal relationships, you have spiritual… You have five different circles, so to speak, that are broken down. Once I started to focus on the other areas of my life outside of the business, not only did those areas get better, but my business got better. That’s when I really started to see a transformation in my business. That very much goes along with Brian and Brian’s method of coaching. That’s why I feel very strongly about Brian.
I don’t have a relationship with Brian and this video is only my testament because it’s helped me. But I know there’s a lot of people out there looking at real estate coaching. I often get asked because I get coached by the other guy, so to speak, in my office ’cause there’s a lot of people that follow Tom in my office. They get coached by Tom and I’m kind of on the other side where I get coached by Brian. I’m often asked why. These are the reasons why. Right? I mean, to me, the relational approach is a more natural approach. I want to get to know my clients better. I want to be on a deeper level with my clients. I want to be there after the transaction’s over, right? I’m not just looking to sell them a home or sell their home rather, I’m looking to be there well after the transaction is ended. When they have questions about anything real estate related, they’re calling me, They’re thinking of me. Their friends of family are thinking of buying or selling, they’re thinking of me.
That’s why I chose one over the other. I hope this is helpful. Again, I think there’s great things to be said about both guys. And again, both are very relevant in the marketplace. But to me, the relational aspect was a much more meaningful approach and that’s why I chose to take that path, so to speak. Anyway, I appreciate you taking the time to watch. I love doing videos on real estate and helping not only buyers and sellers, but real estate agents out there in making decisions and… ‘Cause real estate coaching is a big decision. It’s not cheap, but I will tell you that it is well worth it. The real estate coach is there to push you in areas that you wouldn’t normally… you may not have the courage to go on your own. There’s often plateaus hit in real estate as well, whether it’s volume or sells or what have you and they’re there to kind of push you through those and continue to make you better at your craft. Anyway, I appreciate you taking the time to watch and we’ll see you again soon.
Thank you for writing this. I really appreciate your insight. Very helpful.
Hi Jeb, Thanks for taking the time and energy to write this – it is very helpful and appreciated. Jim
Jeb – Thank you!!! Quick question…if you did this video today (March 2021) would it be any different outcome?
It would not………..I feel exactly the same.
Thank you for this, your assessment is right on. I tried both as well, and I’ve been coached by Brian Buffini for over 15 years. I would not be a successful realtor, if it we’re not for his amazing techniques of maintaining relationships. Early on Brian once said “why would you market to 200 people you don’t know and not to 10 people who already know you and trust you.” The referral program is amazing, and I appreciate your honesty.
Thank-you. I appreciate it.
I think I will go with Brian’s coaches. However, since neither one of them coach you, instead, are coached by their assistant coaches & you don’t think your coach is helping you, can you ask for a new coach? Also,it’s expensive. Did you get coached every week or every other week? Thanks so much.
